Peach-faced lovebirds are generally considered quiet enough to be kept in an apartment, but this does not mean they are silent. These little parrots will make themselves heard if they want you to hear them. They are known more for their playful, loving personalities than the ability to talk. They can pick up some chirps and whistles.
The nominate form is mostly green, with a pinkish face from the forecrown to the throat. The beak is yellowish and generally blends nicely with the line of the head shape. The belly is typically a lighter green than the back and wings. The legs and feet are greyish. The flight feathers are dark grey-green. The rump is brilliant blue. Females tend to be larger than males, but there are no definitive differences between male and female.
Young birds look like adults but are duller overall and lack the pink face. They may have a very light blushing.
Lovebirds have been colour bred far from their wild form. The colour can range from a different arrangement of the normal colours to a complete lack of any "normal" colour. The shape and physique is not affected by mutation breeding.
Peach-faced Lovebirds and their mutations have wonderful charm and characteristics such as being active, playful, and amusing. They are intelligent little birds and make a wonderful companion and friend. They can be kept by beginners who are confident and willing to learn, people who have bird experience often love these birds as they boil over with personality.
NOTE: Many people believe that lovebirds must be kept in pairs. This is not true. If you are looking to keep a companion bird who wish to socialize and bond with we recommend keeping just one. If you house multiple handfed birds together in the same cage they will start to bond with the other bird(s) more than they would bond with you and your family. A single bird's flock is their human companions.
Bird pellets such as ZuPreem Natural pellets should make up the majority of the diet. Their diet can be kept varied with fresh fruits and veggies along with whole wheat or veggie pasta plus cooked rice which has been cooled down to room temperate. Cooked sweet potato cooled to room temperature is also great for providing extra Vitamin A content!
A roomy cage is required as lovebirds are very active birds. Ideally, a cage for a lovebird should not be smaller than 4 square feet. A variety of perches and at least 3 toys should be present at all times. DO NOT provide a mirror or fake bird for your lovebird.
